THE PRACTICAL
BOOK OF COBS, 20th Anniversary (4th) Edition,
by Daniel Frank Sedwick (2007). Soft cover,
254 pages, illustrated with maps, diagrams and
photos. This popular book has been out of print
since 1995 and unavailable for a number of years
now, so this new edition should be a most welcome
addition to the market! Greatly expanded from the
previous edition (more than 100 pages longer!), this
20th Anniversary edition contains a long new section
on the shipwrecks that have yielded cobs over the
years, complete with a foldout map and specific
bibliographies for each wreck. Autographed by the
author. For further information about this book

The Colonial Mint
of Guatemala: An Account of its 90-Year History with
an Illustrated Catalogue, by Carlos Jara and Carlos
M. Paiz (2021).
The Colonial Mint of Guatemala holds a
prominent place for numismatists and collectors due
to the unusual amount of rare and important pieces
it issued. However, its history is probably the
least known amongst the series of Spanish Colonial
mints, mainly because of the scant documented
information that has been published on the subject.
The present work aims to fill this gap, presenting
for the first time a complete and documented history
of the colonial period of this mint, from its
foundation until the independence of Guatemala in
1821, as well as a detailed cataloguing of the coins
and medals corresponding to this period. Hardcover,
529 pages. (limited quantity)

SPANISH TREASURE
BARS From New World Shipwrecks
(Volume One), by Alan K. Craig and Ernest J.
Richards, Jr. (2003). This book combines
the many years of numismatic and historic study by
these two acknowledged scholars —and their
experience in their fields— to bring the reader a
detailed —yet understandable— overview of this
subject. In 228 8.5” x 11” softbound pages, Craig
and Richards ably explain what is known to date
regarding treasure ingots, accenting the text with
over 300 illustrations plus a 42-page “spread sheet”
of data on 963 of the silver bars recovered from
Nuestra Señora de Atocha. Charts, maps, photos (18
in color), and drawings depict the bars, people who
found them, the New World regions where they were
made, and details of their markings. signed by both authors |

The Great
Transition at the Potosí Mint, 1649-1653: The
1649-1652 Crowned Shield Coinage and the
Countermarks of 1652 - Part A: The 1649-1652 Crowned
Shield Coinage 270 pages by Robert Mastalir.
An exhaustive study and census of the issues
of silver coinage in the Shield Type design from the
mint of Potosí, Bolivia, in the years 1649-1652,
covering three assayers (Zambrano, Rodas and Elgueta)
and four dates (1649, 1650, 1651 and 1652), with a
thorough treatment of every die and combination
(obverse and reverse) based on careful examination
of thousands of actual coins, most recovered from
the shipwrecks Capitana (sunk in 1654 off Ecuador)
and Maravillas (sunk in 1656 off the Bahamas), both
ships representing a time capsule of coinage that
was otherwise destroyed when new coinage at higher
value was instituted in 1652.
The Great Transition at the Potosí Mint,
1649-1653: The 1649-1652 Crowned Shield Coinage and
the Countermarks of 1652 - Part B: The Countermarks
of 1652 562 pages. The complexity of Potosí's silver coinage in the
Shield Type design of 1649-1652 is compounded by the
fact that most of it was countermarked by various
Royal representatives to attest to their proper
fineness, after the revelation of a mint scandal in
which it was discovered that Potosí's coinage from
prior decades had been struck from debased silver,
for which several officials were eventually
executed. This volume is a complete examination of
all the known countermarked coins (numbering in the
thousands), thoroughly organized into types
and subtypes, with complete census information for
all the countermarks. |

The Great
Transition at the Potosí Mint 1649 - 1653: The 1652
Transitional 8 Reales (2015) by Robert MastalirThis book
describes in detail all the die-varieties of Potosi,
Bolivia, cob 8 reales (silver coins) struck in 1652,
a year of transition of design to what has become
known as the "pillars-and-waves" style of 1652-1773.
The previous design, up to and including 1652,
featured instead a full Habsburg coat-of-arms
(shield). This book also details the events leading
up to the change of design, particularly the
investigation and prosecution of fraud at the mine
and mint in the 1620s through 1640s that resulted in
silver coins that were underweight and below
standard in fineness.
The Great Transition at the Potosí Mint 1649 -
1653: The 1652 Transitional Minor Denominations 4,
2, 1 and 1/2 Reales. (2016) by Robert Mastalir.
This book describes in detail all the die-varieties
of Potosi, Bolivia, cob 4,2,1 and 1/2 reales (silver
coins) struck in 1652, a year of transition of
design to what has become known as the
"pillars-and-waves" style of 1652-1773. The previous
design, up to and including 1652, featured instead a
full Habsburg coat-of-arms (shield). This book also
details the events leading up to the change of
design, particularly the investigation and
prosecution of fraud at the mine and mint in the
1620s through 1640s that resulted in silver coins
that were underweight and below standard in
fineness. Also contained in this book are brief
descriptions of a couple shipwrecks (the Capitana of
1654 and the Maravillas of 1656) that yielded a
majority of these transitional coins recent decades,
enabling a rigorous die-study like this one to
finally be realized. The various die changes are
illustrated by photos and drawings throughout.

Las Monedas que circularon en la Capitanía General
de Puerto Rico (The Coins that circulated in the
Captaincy General of Puerto Rico)
by Ortiz Murias, Jorge
This book (written in Spanish) describes which coins
specifically circulated on the Island of Puerto Rico
during the period that the island was conquered and
colonized, both by the Spanish Empire and the United
States of America, between 1508 and 1900. The
circulation of coins in the time of the Colonization
of the New World was somewhat complicated, due to
the diversity of values in circulation in European
countries, those produced in the mints of the new
territories and the fluctuations in the value of the
metals used. A chapter of this work deals with the
problem that caused the change of the monetary
system from Spanish to North American, since each of
them is based on different units, weights and metal
purity, which caused disagreement with the
population, when the North American authorities they
established the equivalence for the change. The
author also deals with the first circulation bills
on that island, which are extremely scarce. ISBN

Monedas Provisionales del Estado Del Salvador -
Provisional Coins of El Salvador, by Miguel
Villavicencio *in Spanish.
This Catalog has the purpose of listing and
classifying the first coins produced in El Salvador,
between 1828 and 1835, while it was one of the
States of the Federal Republic of Central America.
It includes a synthesis of the history, to
understand the circumstances that motivated El
Salvador to stand against the Federal Republic and
the reason behind the coinage of El Salvador. These
emblematic coins that mark the beginning of the
transformation of the Salvadoran state into an
independent republic.
Very few collectors know about these types of coins
and the historical legacy they contain. This book is
trying to rescue them from the lack of information
and study material and puts the effort on making a
complete inventory of the different varieties,
trying to simplify these coins by types,
illustrating the differences between them, and
explaining what the marks and elements found on the
coins and their representation. 120 pages in full
color. |

Medallic
Portraits of Admiral Vernon: Medals Sometimes lie.
By John W. Adams, Fernando Chao (h) and Anne E.
Bentley
The authors’ "History
of the Events" sets the historical record straight
and is accompanied by a bibliography, a guide to
collecting the series, a chapter on the metals
utilized, and a vital series of appendices
comprising concordances, a census, biographical
notes on prominent collectors, a guide to grading,
and other germane topics. These sections are the
soul of the book; its heart is the extensive,
detailed catalogue of "The Medals Themselves,"
comprising two thirds of the volume. Here, over 275
medals are depicted in full color enlargements,
accompanied by painstakingly detailed descriptions
printed in two colors for ease of use.†Dr. Joel J.
Orosz has termed the book "one of the signal
triumphs of modern numismatic scholarship" and
concludes that "In fact, Medallic Portraits of
Admiral Vernon†does such a superb job of defining
the previously indefinable, the only numismatic book
to which it can be appropriately compared is
Sylvester Sage Crosby's Early Coins of America."
