SS
Republic, sunk in 1865 off Georgia
|
The
SS Republic
began its life as the merchant ship SS Tennessee, launched in
1853. When the Civil War began on April 12, 1861, she was tied up in the
New Orleans harbor. She was then pressed into service as a Confederate
blockade runner named the CSS Tennessee but never escaped the
harbor. After the war, she was sold and renamed the
SS Republic. On her final voyage in October of 1865, she was
carrying passengers and cargo including $400,000 in silver and gold
coins. She got caught in a strong hurricane and sank on Oct. 25, 1865
off the coast of Georgia. In 2003, the wreck was located and a large
amount of rare U.S. gold and silver coins were recovered.

USA (New Orleans Mint),
Seated Liberty half dollar, 1853-O, NGC Shipwreck Effect / SS Republic
Inscribed. Not only is this a desirable type coin from the wreck but the
additional presence of a hand carved A on the obverse makes this a unique
shipwreck coin. One can imagine a bored person in New Orleans errantly
carving this initial into the coin they found in their pocket sometime in
the 1850s or 1860s.

Shipwreck Paper Money:
SS Andrea Doria, sunk in 1956 off Nantucket
|
The SS Andrea Doria
was an Italian luxury liner operated by the Italian Line from 1953 to
1956. During her three years of service, she had many transatlantic
voyages and became popular with passengers for her luxury
accommodations and quick speed. On the night of July 25, 1956, the
Andrea Doria collided with the MS Stockholm, a Swedish American
Line passenger liner, while travelling through heavy fog. The
Stockholm's bow penetrated the Andrea Doria's starboard side,
leaving a gaping hole. However, safety measures kept the Andrea Doria
afloat for 11 hours, long enough for the survivors to evacuate. All
together, 46 people died aboard the Andrea Doria while 6 crew
members of the Stockholm were killed. ...
Please note there is an
shipping and insurance charge of $17 on any Andrea Doria notes. (Note
these pieces are also listed under Paper Money Category)
